Adelaide Hills GP clinic installs SA-developed air purifier to kill viruses including coronavirus

This sounds like something we could all do with. An SA-made air purifier that potentially kills Covid, using world-first technology, is being installed in a Hills clinic.

An Adelaide Hills GP clinic is installing air purifying technology developed in Adelaide with potential for it to be rolled out to 90 clinics in the Better Medical group.

Keswick-based PlasmaShield has developed the beer carton-sized unit which can be integrated into existing ventilation and airconditioning system with the claim it can eliminate airborne bacteria and viruses – potentially including coronavirus.

The company says it is the only technology clinically proven to destroy pathogens transmitted through aerosol droplets, preventing the spread of infection through coughs and sneezes.

The Better Medical GP clinic in Mount Barker is the first in the world to install the TGA-listed medical device which uses water electrolysis and plasma to create electron beam irradiation that bombards microorganisms, penetrating their cell walls and destroying them.

Better Medical chief executive Jeremy Stones said the company is considering it for its 90 practices across Australia.

“We want the safest possible environment for our patients and staff at our practices and we’re continually looking at ways in which we can improve this, particularly in light of the pandemic,” he said. “The World Health Organisation has determined that water droplets are the main route of transmission for airborne infections, so installing the system means this clinic has arguably the highest air quality of any GP practice in the world.

“From an operational perspective, it is also much more cost-effective to install than comparable systems, has lower operating costs, fewer maintenance issues and doesn’t require constant cleaning.”

PlasmaShield chief executive Nick Haslam said the company had partnered with all three South Australian universities to test the system during development over the past decade. “Having evidence-based independent verification is very important to us,” he said. “PlasmaShield is the world’s first technology to efficiently decompose water droplets and microorganisms contained within them. “It’s great to be working with such a high quality primary healthcare provider in Better Medical. While there are obvious applications in health, we have also established clients in other industries. It’s a very exciting time.”

He declined to name a price saying factors such as size of the facility and number of units being installed would have a bearing.
